Plans to build up to 600 low-carbon homes at Edinburgh’s Meadowbank sports centre moved a step closer with the city council approving the site’s redevelopment masterplan.
Collective Architecture has designed a mixed-use development with shops and offices on the ground floor with flats above and space for a GP surgery and other community facilities. One-fifth of the homes will be for families and the scheme will also offer provision for the elderly.
Housing, homelessness and fair work convener, Cllr Kate Campbell, said the plans had taken on wide-ranging feedback from the community.

“We’re proposing over a third of the homes we build at Meadowbank will be affordable – with most of those for social rent. To support our ambition to be a carbon-neutral city by 2030, we’re also going to create great public spaces for children to play and people to meet, walk and cycle through.
“We’re prioritising people over cars and keeping parking to a minimum as well as building high-quality energy efficient homes.”
Green spaces to be enhanced
The rare Wheatley elms at the western edge of the site along London road are to be protected with new species supporting biodiversity to be planted. Landscape architects Raeburn Farquhar Bowen have designed a network of walkways with play and park spaces and a rain garden.
The 13-acre site is next to Lochend Park with views of Arthur’s Seat and is just five-minutes-walk to Holyrood Park and 35 minutes to Waverley train station.
The new Meadowbank sports centre, on the former stadium where Edinburgh hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1970 and 1986, is expected to be finished later this year.
The city council’s development management sub-committee is to consider the masterplan in more detail this summer.

Financial brokers Hank Zarihs Associates said the scheme was in a strong position to attract property development funding because of it’s close location to the city centre.
